MEDIA RELEASE The Hon John Anderson MP Deputy Prime Minister Minister for Transport and Regional Services Leader of The Nationals

13 May 2005 A60/2005

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Transport and Regional Services, John Anderson, announced today that the Government has approved the appointment of Greg Russell to the position of chief executive officer of Airservices Australia, the Government-owned air traffic provider.

The announcement of a new CEO follows the appointment of six new Board members, including a new Chair, by the Government in December last year.

The Board of Airservices Australia selected Mr Russell, currently Chief Operating Officer at Athens International Airport, as the new CEO after an exhaustive worldwide search. He is expected to return home to take up his post at the end of June or early July.

"Mr Russell brings many years of experience as an executive in the aviation industry to this role. With this mix of skills acquired in managing airlines and airports he will bring a valuable perspective to Airservices as the Government moves to remove all regulatory functions from the organisation and complete a review of its structure, governance and organisational performance with the aim of making it stronger," Mr Anderson said.

Mr Russell, a graduate of the Australian National University, former executive at Sydney Airport and past General Manager of Hazelton Airlines, was recruited by Athens International Airport to oversee the preparations and implementation for the 2004 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

"I am very pleased to announce this appointment and am very confident that Mr Russell, under the guidance of the Board, will take Airservices Australia forward and ensure it will respond to both the needs of the aviation industry and Government," Mr Anderson said.

The Deputy Prime Minister thanked Mr Hisham El-Ansary for his service as Acting CEO since January 2005.
