McLean judgment

The New South Wales Supreme Court has handed down its decision in the retrial of William Leonard McLean's common law damages claim arising from the collision of the HMAS Melbourne and Voyager.

Mr McLean was a crewman on the HMAS Melbourne.

Mr McLean was awarded $819,836 including interest of $321,836. He had been awarded $1.7 million at the initial trial.

The Court has stayed execution of the judgment until 5pm 3 March.

The Commonwealth will examine the lengthy reasons for judgement.

Any speculation on the Commonwealth's response to the judgment is premature.
