Government Fails on Budget Honesty - Again

The Government has refused to allow key Budget information to be provided to the House of Representatives Shadow Minister for Finance Lindsay Tann er said today.

“On Tuesday, senior Department of Finance officers provided key forward estimate information to a Senate Estimates Committee. This is part of the set of information that the Government undertook to provide in the Budget Papers and didn’t.

“Not only was this information provided to the Senate committee, it was actually available to journalists in the Budget lock-up. Today I sought to provide this information to the House of Representatives and the Government refused to allow me to do so.

“I challenged John Fahey to bring this information into the House and he hasn’t. Now the Government refuses to allow the Opposition to provide information to the Parliament - information that was given out to the media in the Budget lock-up.

“The performance of Ministers and officials in various Senate Estimates Committees this week has shown that virtually no one in the Government knows what’s going on. This seems to extend all the way to the head of John Fahey’s own department, who was recently described as one of the best and brightest in the public service, but who couldn’t even manage to get his staff to produce forward estimates on time.

“Today’s performance in the House shows that what previously seemed to be inept bungling by John Fahey is actually part of an attempt by the Government to reduce the Parliament’s access to Budget information”
