People in Bonner with a terminal illness, their families and carers are being encouraged to apply for a new Australian Government local palliative care grants program.

Member for Bonner, Ross Vasta today said local health related services and organisations could apply for funding to improve palliative care services under the Local Palliative Care grants program.

“This funding is to help achieve the best possible quality of life, both for those who are dying and for their families and carers by providing things such as special beds and facilities for use in the local community,” Mr Vasta said.

“The grants of between $30,000 and $100,000 are for projects that demonstrate a commitment to quality palliative care and can provide improved experiences for the dying and their families and carers.

“The money can also be used to improve services through such things as better patient assessment or staff training in palliative care.”

This $4 million funding is part of the Australian Government’s $23 million commitment to improving palliative care services announced in this year’s Budget.

Grant application kits, which include guidelines and application forms, are available from http://www.health.gov.au/tenders, or by e-mailing localpallcare@health.gov.au

Applications close on Friday 9 September 2005.
