Huge Hobart rally for Recherche Bay

5th Nov 05

Thousands of Tasmanians joined a colourful rally outside the Tasmanian parliament in Salamanca Place today to save Recherche Bay in the island's far south.

In 1793 French Admiral D'Entrecasteaux and his scientists spent weeks communicating with the Palawa Aboriginal people at Recherche Bay, with feasts, sports contests and music.

Logging of a privately owned, 140 hectare peninsula of forest - for Gunns Ltd for export woodchips - is imminent.

Speakers at the rally, organised by the Recherche Bay Protection Group, called on the state and federal governments to purchase the land with just compensation for the owners. TV's gardening great Peter Cundall, Senator Bob Brown, historian Edward Duyker, Deborah Hocking from the Aboriginal community and Recherche Bay Protection Group member and local resident Wren Fraser Cameron joined the call. French speaker Annick Thomas also gave a

welcome.

Senator Brown launched a public appeal to buy the land, asking donors to pledge $1000 each, to complement government contributions. Pledge forms are available on www.bobbrown.org.au
