Greens will refer ABCC legislation Media Release | Spokesperson Rachel Siewert Monday 15th June 2009, 11:57am in

The Australian Greens today announced they will refer the Government's legislation for a replacement Australian Building and Construction Commission (ABCC) to the Employment & Workplace Relations Committee.

"The Greens will make sure proper scrutiny is applied to any ALP Government measure retaining coercive powers against a particular section of the workforce," said Australian Greens industrial relations spokesperson Senator Rachel Siewert.

"If the Government were truly committed to replacing the ABCC, they have a solution sitting right in front of them - the Greens' Building and Construction Industry (Restoring Workplace Rights) Bill, introduced last year."

Evidence to a Senate Inquiry into the Greens' Bill confirmed that the ABCC is fundamentally flawed, breaches the rights of workers in this particular industry, and is grossly unfair.

"The ABCC represents the Howard government's Work Choices agenda at its most extreme, and yet the Rudd government has dragged its heels in addressing these injustices," she concluded.
