28 January 2004

Member for Wannon - David Hawker - today announced grants totalling $85,061 for projects in Ararat, Hamilton and Casterton.

The Veteran and Community Grants help develop projects that provide practical support to veterans in the community.

Mr. Hawker said the largest grant of $42,923 would be used by Southern Grampians Shire Council to upgrade the existing walking trail around Lake Hamilton.

He said the East Grampians Health Service would get $40,719 to buy a 13-seat bus, with wheelchair facilities, for use as a community bus.

The Casterton RSL Sub-branch will use its $1,419 grant to buy a public address system for use at its Memorial Hall and at outdoor functions.

“These grants are extremely valuable to communities because they support often highly-visible local projects that may otherwise prove difficult to develop,” Mr. Hawker said.

“They are also targeted at the veterans in out community who deserve our on-going support and appreciation.

“I have no doubt our veterans and others in the Ararat, Casterton and Hamilton communities will reap the benefits of each of these projects.”

Mr. Hawker congratulated Southern Grampians Shire, East Grampians Health Service and Casterton RSL for their commitment to their communities and for pursuing the grants.

“With these latest allocations, communities throughout our region have now benefited from over $174,000 in Veteran and Community grants,” Mr. Hawker said.
