COUNCIL FOR AUSTRALIA LATIN AMERICA RELATIONS: APPOINTMENT OF NEW EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEMBERS

I am pleased to announce the appointment of two new members to Executive Committee of the Council on Australia Latin America Relations (COALAR), Ms Cristina Talacko and Mr Philippe Etienne.

Ms Talacko and Mr Etienne bring to the Council a wealth of experience which will greatly assist COALAR with its work in Latin America. Ms Talacko is the President of the Australia-Brazil Chamber of Commerce. Mr Etienne is the Chief Executive Officer - Orica Mining Services, Orica Australia.

I would also like to pay tribute to two recently-retired members of the Executive Committee, Mr David Hawes and Mr Graeme Liebelt. Both Mr Hawes and Mr Liebelt made a significant contribution to the work of COALAR and I thank them for their efforts.

COALAR was established in January 2001 to strengthen ties between Australia and Latin America, through providing leadership and commitment to developing the relationship through tangible achievements. Since its formation, the Council has worked to enhance people-to-people links between Australia and Latin America, and through its work across four priority areas - business, education, tourism and culture - Australia’s relations with the region have continued to deepen.

In 2007-08 the Council will continue to build on its achievements in these areas through enhanced programs, and will also take forward major new activities which will include a Leadership Development Program and an Agribusiness Strategy.
