Greens Senator calls on Bacon to stop boycott

30th Mar 04

Greens Senator Bob Brown has called on the Lennon Government to stop the talk of a British tourism boycott of Tasmania.

"I oppose the boycott but it's up to Minister Bacon to halt it by ending the firebombing and 1080 poisoning of Tasmania's ancient forests and wildlife," Senator Brown said.

"Like the mainland boycott of some of Tasmania's foods and beverages in protest at Tasmania's draconian anti-gay laws in the 1990s, this talk of a boycott will have a good side if it brings forward an end to the woodchipping which is destroying our state's international image.

"A year or so ago former premier Jim Bacon drew publicity in London by giving a book of Tasmanian wilderness photographs to Tony and Cherie Blair.

"Now pictures of wild and scenic forests being destroyed are also circulating in the London press.

"The Tasmanian government, claiming credit for the good, must also accept responsibility for the bad.

"The Lennon Government carries total responsibility for any boycott," Senator Brown said.
