Solomon Islands

I welcome the news that ceasefire talks began today on board the HMAS Tobruk between the militant groups, the Government and community representatives in the Solomon Islands.

It is particularly pleasing that all the militant factions are attending the talks. I understand that representatives of the national and provincial Governments are also present and that the process is being observed by church and women's groups.

I am delighted that Australia has been able to assist with these important negotiations and wish the participants all possible success. If the talks are successful, Australia will be able to mobilise further substantial support to underpin the peace-building process. Once a ceasefire is concluded, I propose to dispatch another high-level team of officials to Honiara to hold discussions with the Solomon Islands Government and communities.
