45 NEW HOMES FOR DEFENCE MEMBERS IN TOWNSVILLE

Defence Housing Australia (DHA) has started construction on a $16.5 million housing development in Townsville, which will provide an additional 45 homes for Defence families.

Mr Peter Lindsay MP, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Defence and Member for Herbert, welcomed the development and visited some of the houses currently under construction at Kirwan and Bohle Plains.

“DHA has been building homes in Townsville for a very long time and has provided much-needed, high-quality housing for thousands of Australian Defence Force (ADF) members and their families who are stationed in the city,” Mr Lindsay said.

“These houses will serve the dual purpose of providing accommodation for the increase in housing required related to the relocation of 38SQN to Townsville and the ongoing process of upgrading the quality of housing stock in Townsville.”

“The DHA development will have a positive effect on the local economy, creating employment and providing opportunities for local business through the use of local materials and subcontractors,” Mr Lindsay said.

The majority of houses will include four bedrooms, lounge, dining, family, ensuite, and double lock-up garage, with internal access and covered outdoor patio area.

DHA Managing Director, Michael Del Gigante, said DHA is committed to providing great homes for ADF members.

“This new, three-stage project, will allow us to prepare for the demands of the ADF in the Townsville area. These homes have an expected completion date of November 2007 in time for the Christmas peak posting period for Defence,” Mr Del Gigante said.

Nationally, DHA manages approximately 17,000 residences around Australia, with more than 1,550 properties managed in the Townsville area.

Some 6,000 - 7,000 Airforce and Army serving members work out of the following Defence establishments: RAAF Base Townsville in Garbutt, Lavarack Barracks in Townsville, the Jezzine Barracks at Kissing Point, North Ward and the Ross Island Barracks.
