Title: Apply to Live in Harmony

Federal Member for Eden-Monaro, Gary Nairn, has called for community groups, schools and local governments to apply for grants of between $5,000 and $50,000 as part of the Australian Government’s Living in Harmony initiative.

“Applications have now opened for the 2005 grants round and I encourage local groups to develop innovative ways to promote acceptance and inclusiveness in all areas of the community including youth, media, the arts and sport,” Mr Nairn said.

The Australian Government’s $3.5 million Living in Harmony initiative celebrates our cultural diversity. Central to this success is the Community Grants Program which promotes community togetherness by addressing signs of racism or discrimination. Community groups, schools and local governments are encouraged to take ownership of local issues and develop their own solutions.

“These projects lay the foundation for long lasting community harmony and create a philosophy of acceptance and inclusiveness,” Mr Nairn said.

“One of the enduring strengths of Australian contemporary society is our linguistic, cultural and religious diversity. We must continually work together to maximise the benefits of our multicultural society for future generations.”

Since its inception in 1999, the Community Grants Program has funded 256 projects across the country at a total value of more than $10 million. Copies of the 2005 Living in Harmony community grant application kit can be obtained at www.harmony.gov.au, or contact 1800 782 002, expressions of interest will close on 3 June.
