New aged care service opens in Waterford

A new aged care service in Waterford that will cater for 60 people was officially opened today by the Minister for Ageing, Senator Santo Santoro.

Senator Santoro said the new RSL Care Talbarra centre, operated by RSL (Qld) War Veterans’ Homes Limited, was an excellent example of the new and high standards that had been put in place in aged care by the Howard Government, in cooperation with the aged care sector.

“This kind of home has transformed the sector from a cottage industry with very variable standards to a modern service sector providing older Australians and their families with the quality and choice they want,” Senator Santoro said.

“These new facilities are excellent and I congratulate the operators for creating what is a most pleasant living environment - not just a place to live.”

RSL Care Talbarra is located in the Talbarra Retirement Community, a complex which also includes independent living villas and veterans’ home care.

The new facilities include two recreational halls, a solar-heated pool with heated spa, barbecue area, auditorium, billiards room, library and a hairdresser’s salon.

Links have been made with local service clubs and with a local secondary college, Canterbury College, with plans made for college students to interact with residents of the independent living units and low-care wing.

Arrangements will be made for residents to visit the college, where students will assist residents in using computers and, in the future, students will come to the service to help residents with the computers available at RSL Care Talbarra.

Accommodation at the facility includes a 15-place special care unit for residents with dementia.
