Truss announces membership of the Murray-Darling Basin Community Advisory Committee

Australian Agriculture Minister Warren Truss announced today the membership details of the new-look Murray-Darling Basin Ministerial Council's Community Advisory Committee.

Mr Truss, who chairs the Council, said an independent review of the Committee had recommended, among other things, a new process for appointing its members.

"It's vital that the Committee has the right mix of skills, expertise and diversity to meet the natural resource management (NRM) challenges of the coming decade, particularly given their increasing complexity," he said.

"It was also important to further strengthen the community/government relationship that is at the heart of Basin management, and the best way of doing that was to make the Committee more effective and responsive, and enhance its community consultation arrangements.

"The Council has appointed 20 members to the Committee, comprising 13 State and Territory representatives; five members with specialist skills; two Indigenous members and a deputy chair. (full membership details attached.)

"The successful applicants, chosen from a Basin-wide call for nominations, come from a diverse range of backgrounds. They include landholders and irrigators, representatives from local government, landcare groups, Indigenous groups and catchment bodies."

Mr Truss thanked the outgoing members for their dedication and their advice to Council over the past few years. Their active involvement, and strong commitment to Council matters, has made a significant contribution to sustainable NRM in the Basin and community involvement in its affairs.

"I congratulate the 20 members on their selection, particularly given the calibre and numbers of applicants," he said.

"I believe they have the breadth of skills and experience to ensure the Council successfully tackles the big issues, such as salinity, water use and the health of the Basin's key natural assets.

"The selection process occurred via a Basin-wide call for nominees who were then considered by their respective State and Territory Governments."
