"Livable Communities" Initiative A Valuable First Step Sue Mackay - Shadow Minister for Local Government

Media Statement - 21 June 2001

Senator Sue Mackay, Shadow Minister for Local Government today welcomed the key points of the 2001 National Summit on Cities and Regional Development.

"Today's Summit Communique urging the development of 'Livable Communities' for Australia is a valuable first step in the process of addressing the needs of those living in our cities and towns," said Senator Sue Mackay, Shadow Minister for Regional Services, Territories and Local Government today.

"Our cities and towns are of great economic and social importance, as they contribute to and enhance both quality of life, and the ability of people to participate in the workforce.

"The Local Government sector plays a key role in this process because it deals first-hand with issues of planning, sustainable development and urban design.

"The current lack of a national strategy to guide the growth and development of Australia's cities and regional settlements has occurred because of the Coalition's policy vacuum in this area.

"By contrast, Labor is committed to the revitalisation of COAG, which will build on and advance the spirit of co-operation demonstrated today by the Summit participants.

"I commend this disparate group of organisations for their hard work in developing these initiatives, and taking the lead on these important issues," Senator Mackay said today. Authorised by Geoff Walsh, 19 National Circuit, Barton ACT 2600.
