Media Release

Commonwealth Purchasing Statistics Released Senator Ian Campbell, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts, today released the Purchasing Statistics Bulletin 1999 - statistics on Commonwealth purchasing contract notifications between 1995 and 1999.

The Purchasing Statistics Bulletin presents aggregated comparative information about Commonwealth buying. The data presented has been extracted from the Purchasing and Disposals Gazette Database which contains details of the total estimated liability of contracts valued at $2,000 or more.

'The bulletin documents the value and number of contract notifications by three main sectors - the primary sector, manufacturing sector and service sector-and provides detailed listings of these products and services,' said Senator Campbell.

'This mandatory reporting requirement is based on ensuring that public procurement is open and transparent, and that agencies are accountable for purchasing decisions.'

The bulletin - produced by the Office of Government Online - is in keeping with the Government's commitment to ensure the provision of consistent, reliable and timely services concerning government purchasing and mandatory reporting requirements.

Details of contracts exempt from notification by the Chief Executive of a Commonwealth agency under the Freedom of Information Act 1982 are not contained in the bulletin.
