$3.3MILLION QUEANBEYAN TAFE UPGRADE COMPLETED

The Federal Member for Eden-Monaro Dr Mike Kelly and the State Member for Monaro Steve Whan MP today officially opened a new multi-million dollar facility at the Queanbeyan TAFE Campus.

Both Dr Kelly and Steve Whan welcomed the new $3.3 million training facility at TAFE NSW - Illawarra Institute’s Queanbeyan Campus which will assist local businesses in meeting the continuing demand for skills in the area.

The Australian Government has contributed $2.2million while the NSW Government has contributed $1.146million.

The upgrade consists of: a new learning centre including two classrooms, two computer rooms, three seminar rooms & extra storage New staff facilities & group study an upgrade & relocation of library

the provision of an undercover walkway new car park & landscaping additional disabled access upgraded student amenities

The specific course areas to benefit from this project include: Access Programs General Education Administration Services

Business Services Community Services Information Technology

Dr Kelly said; “These facilities are an investment in educating locals and will boost our regional economy into the future. This facility will be great for teachers and students alike.

“During these difficult economic times it is important that Governments invest in training and skilling our workforce which is why the Rudd Labor Government this week announced a doubling of training places to 113,000 for 2008/09.

“I am personally committed to working with local businesses and the community to address the ongoing demand for skilled workers in Queanbeyan and the region.

“The Australian Government’s support for training centres such as this one underlines its firm commitment to ensuring vocational education, training and career options are available to all Australians”, said Dr Kelly.

Steve Whan said; “the $3.3 million upgrade at Queanbeyan TAFE provides students and teachers with new and refurbished modern facilities.

“Last year over 830 students gained vital workplace skills at the Queanbeyan TAFE campus, including more than 100 students from non-english speaking backgrounds.

“This jointly-funded upgrade is a huge investment in meeting the region’s skills shortages, and I look forward to many thousands of local students benefiting from these improved learning facilities in the years to come.

“Since coming to office, the NSW Labor Government has nearly doubled total education spending and more than tripled spending on maintenance.

“These new facilities will ensure students receive quality vocational training, making them more work-ready on graduation, while our local community benefits from having a highly skilled and talented workforce”, said Steve Whan.
