The Minister for Defence, Mr Ian McLachlan, today announced a 10 year extension of the Pine Gap Treaty.


Mr McLac hlan said the Agreement was signed this morning by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Downer, and the US Ambassador, Mrs Genta Hawkins Holmes.


The Agreement, originally signed between Australia and the United States in 1967, will be extended for a period of 10 years from November 16 until November 2008. It had previously been extended twice for similar terms.


Mr McLachlan said this extension reflects the value of the Pine Gap facility to the countries and mutual confidence In the established arrangements for its joint management and operation.


The Minister said the Joint Defence Facility Pine Gap is an Intelligence gathering facility that will continue to serve both Australia and US security interests well into the next century.


He added that the partnership at Pine Gap symbolised the strong alliance relationship between Australia and the United States.
