Border protection a bad joke

9 November, 2005

The Member for Kennedy Bob Katter said he could not praise enough Gary Ward and the Gulf Fishing Association for their proposal to work as coast guard watchers during the three month closed season.

“If Senator McDonald is unsuccessful promoting it or does not take this proposal to Government, then I will meet with Gulf and East Coast fishermen to arrange for all sightings to be recorded through an office, my own if necessary, where no action is taken by the authorities. This will put enormous and continuing pressure on the Government until action is secured,” Mr Katter said.

He said with over 8000 recorded vessels sighted and with only 208 apprehended, border protection is a joke but one at which North Queenslanders have stopped laughing.
