ABS reports soaring wine sales

The Federal Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Warren Truss, today welcomed the release of Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) figures showing Australia's wine sales have continued to grow strongly.

Mr Truss said he was pleased to note both domestic sales and exports have increased in comparison to last year's figures.

"Seasonally adjusted figures for Australian produced wine revealed an 11.6 per cent increase in domestic sales in May 2001 compared with May 2000," Mr Truss said.

"Domestic sales of white table wine sales increased 5.4 per cent, while red and rosé table wine sales increased 19.7 per cent for the same period.

Mr Truss said that the trend in domestic wine sales for the 12 months to May 2001, compared with the previous 12 months, is very similar with figures of 5.6 per cent and 15.3 per cent respectively.

"Australian wine exports for the 12 months to May 2001 increased 19 per cent in volume and 27.3 per cent in value compared with the previous 12 months," Mr Truss said.

"Total wine exports for the period January to May 2001 (135.6 million litres) was 21.9 per cent higher than the corresponding period last year (111.3 litres), which shows a positive upward trend in sales.

"The success of the wine industry in achieving ever-increasing sales reflects the value that consumers both here and overseas place on Australian wine products.

"It is also an endorsement of the Australian wine industry's management and production practices that are proving to be successful in an ever increasingly competitive market-place.

"The growth in Australia's wine industry in recent years is truly remarkable and the Australian industry has now assured itself a firm position on the international scene.

"These ABS figures reflect a competitive and sustainable agricultural sector which is fundamental to ensuring our rural industries are important catalysts for growth and innovation in regional Australia."

Mr Truss said that Australia's growing wine industry has taken a strong role in contributing to a prosperous regional Australia.
