NEWS RELEASE

MINISTER FOR TRANSPORT & REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT

HON MARK VAILE MP

MORE JETS TO REGIONAL CENTRES

The Minister for Transport and Regional Development, Mark Vaile, said today’s announcement that Kendell Airlines would introduce new jet service s to a number of major centres was welcome news.

“Ansett subsidiary, Kendell Airlines, is to buy 12 new 50-seat regional jets to offer services on the eastern Australian regional route.

“These changes will see a significant expansion for Kendell, and an overall enhancement of air services, including increased frequencies, more convenient schedules and represents a boost for tourism and travel possibilities for the regional communities involved,” Mr. Vaile said.

“Kendell will progressively introduce the new jet services at Rockhampton, Mackay, Ballina, Coffs Harbour, Canberra, Launceston and Hobart over the next three years.

“Kendell is currently evaluating new-generation Embraer 145ER and Bombardier CRJ 200 jets.

“These are aircraft types that have brought traffic growth to North America and European regional routes that have been unable to economically support larger aircraft similar to those currently used by Ansett.

“I am encouraged by the expansion within Australia’s regional airline industry as operators continue to take up new opportunities.

“As a Federal Member of Parliament representing a country constituency - and as Federal Minister for Transport and Regional Development - I fully support any increase in air services to regional Australia.”
