WANNON SECURES HUGE ROAD FUNDING BOOST

Wannon’s eight local government municipalities will receive more than $36 million over the next four years under the Auslink Roads to Recovery Programme, Member for Wannon, David Hawker announced tonight.

This is a 32 per cent increase in funding the councils received during the first four years of the programme.

Mr Hawker said the Roads to Recovery Programme had been scheduled to end in June 2005, but the Government had extended it to June 2009.

“This extra funding will result in better roads for people across Western Victoria,” Mr Hawker explained. “It will begin to flow in the new financial year with more than $9 million budgeted for 2005-06.

“The AusLink Roads to Recovery Programme cuts red tape and delivers vital road funding right where it’s needed - directly to councils.

“I have worked hard to ensure the extension of Roads to Recovery for another four years. This funding ensures vital local road upgrades continue to support local communities, boost local industries and employment and increase road safety.

The Corangamite Shire will receive a 61 per cent funding increase, with new funding totalling more than $5.6 million over the next four years. Overall Moyne Shire receives the largest funding allocation with $6.7 million.

Industries like plantation timber, dairy and cropping are making substantial and growing contributions to Wannon’s local economics. In order to reap the benefits of future expansions we have to ensure our transport network can keep pace with growth.

Mr Hawker said in respect of the Warrnambool City Council allocation, the funding had been based on recommendations by the State Local Government Grants Commission under the new formula.

This formula had been endorsed by the Australian Local Government Association and the Municipal Association of Victoria.
