Bob Brown's Senate Page

31 October 2000

West Papua Peace Plan Backed by Brown Greens Senator Bob Brown has called on the Government and Opposition to adopt the three point peace plan today proposed John Koknak, a leader of the Free Papua Movement appointed to undertake international liaison and diplomacy.

“Its time John Howard refreshed Jakarta with a reminder of the human rights of West Papuans,” Senator Brown said.

“If further bloodshed is to be avoided in West Papua countries like Australia must get actively involved in seeking a peaceful solution.

“The West Papuans, like the East Timorese before them, are right to seek the good offices of Australia as an intermediary in their inevitable path to freedom,” Senator Brown said.

Senator Brown has been facilitating the establishment of a new group of MPs - “Parliamentarians for West Papua”. The Group will have its first meeting in Canberra on Thursday.
