Hartsuyker encourages schools to apply for a slice of $1 billion in additional capital works funding

The Nationals Federal Member for Cowper, Luke Hartsuyker, is encouraging schools in the Cowper electorate to apply for funding under the Australian Governments $1 billion Investing in Our Schools Programme.

The additional funds were a Coalition election commitment and are in addition to the $1.5 billion already committed for capital works in schools across Australia.

Mr Hartsuyker said under the Investing in Our Schools Programme $700 million will be provided to State schools to help repair, replace or install new items critical to their school’s overall needs.

$300 million will be provided to less well off Catholic and Independent schools.

“Local schools will be able to apply for grants of up to $150,000 for their local schools,” Mr Hartsuyker said.

“A school can apply for the full amount for one project or for the funding of a number of smaller projects identified by either the Parent and Friends Association and/or the school principal.

Mr Hartsuyker said it was important that government schools lodged their applications for funding by the due closing dates.

Applications from government schools seeking grants of $50,000 or less are required to be lodged by May 31, 2005 while grants over $50,000 close on August 2, 2005.

Non government schools will be able to apply through the Block Grant Authorities which currently administer Australian Government capital grant funding.

Mr Hartsuyker said schools could choose whether to apply as government organisation or as parent body.

“I know that many of the parent bodies and the school principals have projects which are earmarked as a priority. Funding for the first projects will be announced in the second half of 2005.”

Copies of the application forms are available at www.dest.gov.au or by phoning 1300 363 079.
