Assistance to Young Australians in Rural and Regional Australia Cut By National Party Youth Minister

The Federal Government has cut funding to all 24 Rural Youth Information Services, according to Labor’s Shadow Minister for Children and Youth, Nicola Roxon MP.

Rural Youth Information Services (RYIS) were contacted in July this year and told that their funding would not be continued after December 2002.

“Young Australians living in regional and rural Australia have to deal with isolation and distance on top of the other pressures facing young people in this country” said Ms Roxon. “The Rural Youth Information Services helped these young people with finding employment, education and training and also assisted with referring them to appropriate health and income assistance sources.”

“Young Australians living in rural & regional Australia have every right to be outraged about this unwarranted and mean funding cut.”

“In many cases young people looking for Government assistance will have to travel long distances across regional Australia to find help.”

“We have a National Party Minister for Youth, yet he is the one who has presided over these cuts and even encouraged this attack on country Australia under his so-called Simple Services Solutions.”

Whilst the Government has encouraged the providers of the Rural Youth Information Service to apply for funding under the Job Placement, Employment and Training Program (JPET), they have not announced one extra cent to the JPET budget to make up for the cut to the RYIS.

“Minister Anthony may not realise that not every town which has a Rural Youth Information Service has a JPET provider, unlike in Tweed Heads in his electorate of Richmond.”

NOTE - a list of the locations of the Rural Youth Information Services is attached.
