THE CHALLENGE ON LOCAL GOVERNMENT

The Shadow Minister for Regional Services, Territorie s and Local Government, Labor Senator Sue Mackay has challenged the Federal Government to increase the role of local government in regional development across Australia.

Speaking at the Municipal Association of Victoria’s Annual Conference, Senator Mackay has challenged the Government to follow through with the recommendations of the recent Senate report into regional employment and unemployment, titled “Jobs for the Regions.”

“Government and Opposition Senators agreed on the majority of Recommendations, including all those advocating a greater role for local government in regional development issues. The Government must make a commitment to follow through with these Recommendations.”

“To date the Minister for Local Government, Senator Ian Macdonald has done nothing more than make a bland statement about bush politics and bureaucracy.”

“Local government is uniquely placed to have an important input into policy development, adding a depth of localised knowledge and experience. In addition, local governments across the country have a very impressive level of energy, flexibility and drive.”

“The challenge is for the Federal Government to actually bring local government to the table as a partner, not just an afterthought” said Senator Mackay.
