EXTENSION ON STUDY REQUIREMENTS FOR MEDIATORS

Experienced family law mediators will be exempted from the requirement to enrol in a suitable course of tertiary study by 31 August 1998 and will now be required to be in such a course by 31 August 1999.

As part of my overall examination of the report of the National Alternative Dispute Resolution Advisory Council (NADRAC) on Primary Dispute Resolution in Family Law, I am considering recommendations to amend the Family Law regulations regarding family and child mediation.

I have decided to provide an extension of the time by which experienced mediators must enrol in a course to 31 August 1999 to provide mediators with certainty while consideration of regulations continues.

The government has a strong commitment to the provision of quality primary dispute resolution services, and before making any changes wishes to comprehensively examine all the relevant developments which have occurred in this field since the NADRAC recommendations were made.
