Evacuation of Australian Nationals from Honiara

The Minister for Defence, John Moore, today announced that the Federal Government had decided to undertake the evacuation of Australian and other approved nationals from Honiara.

HMAS Tobruk has been tasked with carrying out this evacuation and will arrive in Honiara later today.

In the light of further deterioration in the security situation in and around Honiara, the Australian High Commissioner, Dr Martin Sharp, requested the emergency evacuation of Australian citizens and other nationals.

"The safety of Australians is a prime concern of the Australian Government, and the evacuation is intended to ensure that Australians are not caught up in the violence now occurring around Honiara," Mr Moore said.

"HMAS Tobruk will be responsible only for the safe evacuation of people who are in danger, and will not be involved in any other security operation."

The Minister said that Government remained very concerned by the security deterioration in Honiara, and urged all parties to negotiate a cease-fire without delay.

This would be a necessary precursor to resumption of the ongoing peace process sponsored by the Commonwealth Secretariat.
