Leading Australian joins Marine Science Council.

Federal Science Minister Peter McGauran today announced the appointment of Dr Ian Gould to the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) Council for the next five years.

"Dr Gould’’s experience in industry, along with his broad understanding of environmental issues will be welcomed by the Council," Mr McGauran said.

"The Council has an excellent mix of business, research and policy expertise to provide support and advice to the Director of AIMS, Prof Stephen Hall.

"In particular, Dr Gould’s industry experience will assist AIMS as it collaborates with stakeholders throughout Australia to better meet their research requirements.

"AIMS is in the process of preparing a strategic plan that will continue its efforts to deliver world class marine research and Dr Gould will help to target that research effort in areas of greatest need for industry."

Dr Gould has over 25 years experience in the mining industry, including the appointments of Managing Director of Normandy Mining, Rio Tinto and Comalco Mineral Products, and Group Executive of CRA.

Currently, he is Deputy Chairman of Western Metals and Chairman of the South Australian Resources Industry

Development Board.

He is a past National President of the Royal Flying Doctor Service and is currently vice-president of the Central Section of the Royal Flying Doctor Service. He is also Chairman of St Andrews Hospital and Treasurer of the Daw House Hospice Foundation in Adelaide.

"I welcome the appointment and look forward to Dr Gould’s contributions to the AIMS Council in the years ahead," Mr McGauran said.
