John Forrest, The Nationals Federal Member for Mallee recently announced that the Libraries Sunraysia has been successful in obtaining a grant under the Regional Arts Victoria Quick Response Grants.

The $1,500 grant supported the recent three day children’s and adolescent’s literature festival - Libraries Sunraysia Lit Fest 2007. Events included writers in schools, professional development writing workshops and a public forum evening.

Mrs Camilla Elliott of Libraries Sunraysia said the funding was really great news. “We are committed to providing our rural young people with the same opportunities their metropolitan cousins can take for granted in meeting authors and attending workshops.” said Mrs Elliott.

“We are also keen to attract further funding to expand the programme next year to perhaps include younger readers, illustrators and a Saturday program of events for families.”

Mr Forrest said the Libraries Sunraysia project was a good example of the type of program suited to the Quick Response Grants. “I am sure the participants have benefited from what the workshops and writers contribute,” Mr Forrest said.

The grants are available to organisations registered in Victoria for cultural development and arts initiatives in regional Victoria. The Regional Arts Fund is an initiative of the Commonwealth Government, supporting the arts in regional, rural and remote Australia.
