CHRIS PEARCE MP Federal Member for Aston

Media Release

Local businesses had an opportunity to meet with the Federal Treasurer, Peter Costello at a breakfast hosted by Aston MP Chris Pearce today.

Addressing the local breakfast, Mr Costello asked Premier Bracks what part of the word freeway he didn’t understand.

“The Federal Government has a signed contract with the Victorian State Government, to build a freeway and the State Government have walked away from the agreement. This has never happened in Australia before. The State Government agreed to a freeway but now want to build a tollway,” the Treasurer said.

The Treasurer raised concerns that the backflip on Scoresby decision was proof that the Bracks Government could not be trusted with future promises. “Every promise the Bracks Government makes from now on must be considered as a Scoresby Promise”

A call was also made to Federal Opposition Leader, Mark Latham, to state whether he would honour the Memorandum of Understanding with the Victorian State Government despite the decision to impose tolls.

The Treasurer paid tribute to Chris Pearce for his work in Aston, fighting for issues like the Scoresby Freeway. “It is a pleasure to have people with such ability on the team” he said.

Earlier, the Treasurer took time to listen and speak with local residents and business owners about a range of issues facing the people of Aston.
