POSSIBLE CHANGE IN GOVERNANCE FOR CHRISTMAS

AND THE COCOS (KEELING) ISLANDS

 

The Territories Minister, Alex Somlyay, has announced that he intend s to carefully consult the residents of the Indian Ocean Territories of Christmas Island and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands about future governance arrangements in the light of the Government’s decision to grant Statehood to the Northern Territory.

 

“These consultations will be comprehensive, and will build on the work being undertaken by the strategic review recently appointed to assess the economic and funding needs of the two Territories,” Mr Somlyay said.

 

“Cabinet has decided that, in principle and subject to terms and conditions to be determined by the Federal Parliament, Statehood should be granted to the Northern Territory,” he said.

 

The Prime Minister, John Howard, made the announcement today In Canberra, and at the same time Mr Somlyay made a similar statement to the NT Legislative Assembly in Darwin.

 

“There are a number of important matters to be resolved in the Statehood process, including the future governance of the Indian Ocean Territories and the Territory of Ashmore and Cartier Islands.”

 

“I assure the residents of both Cocos and Christmas islands that I will consult them about the effect of any changes in service delivery and legislative arrangements that the process of NT Statehood might have on the governance of these Territories,” he said.
