SPECIAL FEDERAL LOAN FOR CASCADE CLIFF ON NORFOLK ISLAND

The Territories Minister, Mr Alex Somlyay, announced today that the Federal Government will provide an interest free loan to the Norfolk Island Government to allow the stabilisation of Cascade Cliff on Norfolk Island.

"Cascade Cliff has been a safety issue for many years with rocks falling from the Cliff onto the road near the jetty. This is extremely hazardous to people and property," Mr Somlyay said.

"The Federal Government is assisting the Norfolk Island Government with a $3 million interest free loan for this project. A prime aim is to ensure that the period of disruption to Cascade jetty, the main unloading point for vessels bringing supplies to the Island, is kept to a minimum."

"Norfolk Island is an Australian Territory with a degree of self-government similar to the ACT and the Northern Territory, and this loan is further tangible evidence of the Commonwealth's support for the Norfolk Island community and the close working relationship between the Federal and Norfolk Island Governments," he said.
