MEDIA RELEASE

SCHOOL CHILDREN SHOULD BE AT SCHOOL NOT AT PROTESTS

November 14, 2002 MIN 233/02

I am a supporter of young people challenging and debating mainstream ideas.

However this should not be done in a way which breaks the law.

School attendance is compulsory for children aged between 6 and 15 (16 in Tasmania).

I would expect that State and Territory Education Ministers would join me in advocating this position.

The vast majority of parents and teachers, I believe, think that students should be at school, not blockading the meeting of World Trade Organisation Trade Ministers at Homebush Bay.
