Australian Day 2005

20th January 2005

Federal Member for Fowler, Julia Irwin, said Australia Day was an important celebration of unity and diversity.

“Our nation unites us irrespective of race or religion and reaffirms our confidence in the future.

“This Australia Day is set against the tragic tsunami which struck our nearest neighbours.

“It is significant that Australians felt as one for all those affected in the region. We reacted as a whole community, as a mature nation, to the event, a sure sign that we have a cohesive society which can look beyond the immediate needs of groups or individuals which make up our social structure.

“Being Australian means we believe in freedom and a fair go for everybody.

“In our community, the most diverse in the country, we are one and that’s a good reason to celebrate the nation that unites us all as Australians,” Mrs Irwin said.
