MEDIA RELEASE SENATOR THE HON ROBERT HILL Minister for Defence Leader of the Government in the Senate

Sunday, 5 June 2005 093/2005

Defence Minister Robert Hill will meet with United States Secretary of Defense, Donald Rumsfeld, at the International Institute for Strategic Studies’ Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore today.

The dialogue brings together Defence Ministers, officials and experts from the Asia-Pacific together with representatives from the United Kingdom and Europe to discuss security issues.

Senator Hill said the meeting with Secretary Rumsfeld will provide an opportunity to discuss the progress of reconstruction and rehabilitation operations in Iraq and progress in the global war on terrorism.

“Our meeting provides a good opportunity to discuss the way ahead for coalition efforts in rebuilding Iraq following the democratic elections earlier this year,” Senator Hill said.

“It will also allow for discussion on joint cooperative arrangements between the US and Australia such as joint training exercises, intelligence sharing and interoperability of Defence capabilities.

Senator Hill and Secretary Rumsfeld will be available for a brief interview at 12.00 noon today 5 June (local time) outside the Lotus Room, Shangri-La Hotel Singapore, following their meeting.

A short picture opportunity will be made available at the beginning of the meeting at 11.30am.
