Democrats Collapse on Renewables Bill ‘Woodchip corporations will love them’ - Brown

In a backflip this afternoon the Democrats caved in to allow the Government’s flawed renewable energy bill to pass the Senate virtually unamended, Greens Senator Bob Brown said today.

“The legislation will foster woodchips from native forests being burnt and counted as renewable, squeezing down the bill’s support for more expensive solar and wind power,” Senator Brown said.

“The proposed 30 megawatt woodchip furnace in Tasmania will be accredited to sell ‘environmentally friendly’ power to mainland cities under the Hill-Allison bill.

“Just yesterday the Democrats put out a media release claiming they had secured amendments to the bill. Not only were those amendments not Democrats amendments (they were from the ALP and Greens) but now the Democrats have dumped them,” Senator Brown said.

“The Democrats also abandoned amendments to ensure the penalties in the bill were adjusted for inflation to ensure power companies comply in the critical years 2005-2010. Without these CPI adjustments the incentives for renewable energy will be serially eroded,” Senator Brown said.

“This shatters the Democrats environmental credibility but the woodchip corporations will love them,” Senator Brown said.
