Improved Health Care for Veterans in NSW ansd the ACT

Veterans in New South Wales and the ACT now have greater access to quality hospital care and treatment, with 46 private hospitals forming partnerships with the Department of Veterans’ Affairs.

The Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, Bruce Scott, today announced veteran partnering contracts had been signed with the hospitals as part of the Federal Government’s commitment to provide an additional $750 million funding over five years for direct purchasing of hospital care for entitled veterans across Australia.

These hospitals will enjoy the same Tier 1 classification status as public hospitals in NSW and the ACT under my department’s Repatriation Private Patient Scheme, he said.

The 46 private hospitals join two other private hospitals, Lady Davidson Private Hospital in Sydney and Albury Wodonga Private Hospital, which are already operating as veteran partnering facilities.

Veteran partnering gives veterans streamlined access to quality hospital services.

The veteran partnering contracts give doctors increased flexibility in obtaining the best possible care for their veteran patients, by allowing them to admit entitled veteran and war widow/widower patients without obtaining prior approval from the department.

The successful tenderers have been offered contracts because of their demonstrated ability to perform at the highest industry standard, while providing a wide range of services at competitive rates at locations convenient to most veterans, Mr Scott said.

Veteran partnering has already been introduced in Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia and country Queensland.  The experience in those States shows that veteran partnering can deliver more responsive and improved public and private acute health care services for the veteran community in NSW and the ACT.

The four-year contracts with the 46 selected hospitals will come into effect on Monday.  Veterans can continue to access care through private hospitals that do not have Tier 1 status, under Tier 2 arrangements, which require prior approval.
