LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION

STATEMENT BY THE LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION, THE HON KIM BEAZLEY MP

MICHAEL COSTELLO APPOINTED CHIEF OF STAFF

I am delighted to announce that Mr Michael Costello has agreed to be appointed Chief of Staff of my office.

Michael Costello is a highly regarded and immensely experienced person who rose to be Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, before taking up his present position as Deputy Managing Director (Strategic Planning and Business Support) at the Australian Stock Exchange in Sydney.

Michael’s distinguished public service career included the posts of Secretary of the Department of Industrial Relations, and Australian ambassador to the United Nations.  He is also a former Principal Adviser to the then Foreign Minister Bill Hayden.

I am extremely pleased that Michael Costello has agreed to contribute his acknowledged depth and experience towards the task of preparing Labor to return to Government at the next election.

Mr Costello will take up his new post later this month.
