M e d i a R e l e a s e THE HON. WARREN SNOWDON MP Federal Member for Lingiari 17th November 2008 PRIME MINISTER’S NATIONAL BINGE DRINKING STRATEGY: $149,944 FOR SUNRISE HEALTH SERVICE The Federal Government is investing in the future of Indigenous young people around Katherine with a targeted program to tackle binge drinking, the Member for Lingiari, the Hon. Warren Snowdon MP, announced today. “The ‘Grog and You’ program to be delivered over the next two years by Sunrise Health Service Aboriginal Corporation is designed to educate young people aged between 12-24 years in the dangers of binge drinking,” said Mr Snowdon. “Sunrise Health has a sound record of improving the health and well being of Indigenous people living in the region east of Katherine. “And I expect this latest initiative, which works with young people before irresponsible drinking patterns are established, will augment the actions already being taken by the Katherine Town Council, and many community organisations to solve local grog issues.” Sunrise Health Service Aboriginal Corporation’s ‘Grog and You’ project will receive $149,944 over 14 month, and is one of 19 funded in this round of the Government’s $7.2 million Community Level Initiative community based grants. It forms part of the $53.5 million allocated to the National Binge Drinking Strategy. “It is important that we work with communities and families to ensure real change occurs to youth attitudes,” said Mr Snowdon. “The ’Grog and You’ program will include community development, education programs and activities such as discos and sporting events designed to divert young people away from high risk activities. “Local organisations like Sunrise know what activities will and won’t work. They also have the commitment and energy to succeed.

“Abuse of alcohol affects everyone in our community. This funding will help to reduce the mental, physical and social harm caused to individuals, families and communities,” Mr Snowdon said.
