The Nationals Member for Mallee, John Forrest, was very pleased at the recent announcement that Merbein veterans would benefit from an Australian Government grant of $17,250 to Merbein RSL Sub-branch.

Mr Forrest said the Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, Danna Vale, had approved the Veteran & Community Grants funding in recognition of the needs of more than 3400 veterans and war widows in the Mallee electorate.

“Projects receiving Veteran & Community Grants include health education, lifestyle enhancement, community activities and help for carers and independent living at home,” Mr Forrest said.

“The Merbein RSL Sub-branch commenced operating in 1922 to meet the needs of returned servicemen and women in the soldier settlement area of Merbein after World War I.

“This grant will help the Merbein RSL Sub-branch to upgrade its premises, including improving access to the building. This project will improve the well-being of Sub-branch members by encouraging their continued and increased participation in the activities held at the premises.

“Australians are grateful to our veterans and service personnel for their service and sacrifice in war and conflict and for their continuing contribution to our community,” Mr Forrest said.

“Through these grants, the Australian Government is recognising the important contributions that have been made by our veterans by providing project funding to ex-service organisations and other groups who meet the needs of our local veteran community.”
