Greens’ Censorship Board Concerns Confirmed

Reports in the SMH today (8/5/99) confirm Greens concerns raised yesterday that the Board of the Office o f Film and Literature  Classification is being politicised.

“Well placed sources have informed the Greens that the normal process - whereby  applicants for the board are advertised for, then interviewed and placed on a shortlist for the Attorney—General and Cabinet has been  dumped Greens Senator Bob Brown said yesterday.

“The Government should release full costings of the independent selection process that has now apparently been aborted. The Greens understand that it is in the vicinity of $30-40 000.

“The Prime Minister must come clean and reveal the specific criteria to be used in selecting the new board members.

“This news comes after reports again of a long meeting between the Prime Minister and Senator Harradine. I call for the minutes of that meeting to be released

“There is no better way of ensuring censorship than to ensure the choice of censor,” said Senator Brown
