STATEMENT BY THE LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION THE HON SIMON CREAN MP

APPOINTMENT OF PETER O’CALLAGHAN TO HEAD ANGLICAN CHURCH INQUIRY

I commend the Anglican Church on its appointment today of Australian Football League appeals board chairman Peter O'Callaghan to head an inquiry into the Church's past handling of sexual abuse complaints

Earlier this year, as a result of controversy surrounding the Governor-General’s handling of child sex abuse allegations during his time as Archbishop of Brisbane, I urged the Church to conduct its own inquiry so that victims would have the opportunity to be heard and to seek redress.

Today’s announcement is an important step by the Anglican Church towards addressing this tragic and distressing episode.

It demonstrates the Church is committed to developing procedures and helping the victims of child sexual abuse in a systematic and lasting way.

I urge the Federal Government to reinforce the steps taken by the Anglican Church to tackle child sexual abuse by establishing a National Commissioner for Children and Young People, and to introduce checks on all people who work with children.
