NEW TAXATION THREAT TO COUNTRY SHOWS

Country shows form an important part of the fabric of regional and rural communities and ought not be seen by government as yet another source of revenue to prop up a shaky budget bottom line, according to Shadow Minister for Regional Services, Gavan O’Connor.

It has just been revealed that under the Howard Government’s taxation legislation rural show societies could soon be liable to pay GST on the ribbons and trophies they give to children and adults as prizes.

“This new taxation grab comes on top of an existing obligation to pay GST on the fees show societies must charge entrants in events ranging from wood chopping to cake decorating,” Mr. O’Connor said.

“And it is yet another blow for hard pressed show societies who are still trying to work their way through a complicated and costly insurance minefield.

“The Government ought to recognise the significance of country shows in the life of regional and rural communities and cease adding to the financial and administrative burden faced by the dedicated volunteer committees who give freely of their time and expertise to organise these important events.
