National Library Council appointments announced The National Library of Australia Council's academic and management skills will be extended with two appointments announced today.

Political and multicultural writer, Dr Colin Rubenstein will join the Council and Agricultural Science Professor, Alan Robson, has been reappointed for another three years.

'I am very pleased to welcome Dr Rubenstein to the Council and to congratulate Professor Robson on his reappointment,' Minister for the Arts, Peter McGauran said.

Professor Robson is the Deputy Vice Chancellor at the University of Western Australia, and previously held senior positions as Director of the Cooperative Research Centre for Legumes in Mediterranean Agriculture and Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture.

Dr Rubenstein is the Executive Director of the Australia/Israel and Jewish Affairs Council following 25 years in Political Science at Monash and LaTrobe Universities.

Dr Rubenstein is also a member of the Council for Multicultural Australia.

'Contemporary issues in Australian society-including multicultural and indigenous affairs and rapid technological change-will continue to influence the Library's direction and activities,' Mr McGauran said.

'With the assistance of these members, the Council will be in a better position to take advantage of the opportunities presented.

The collections and services of the National Library underpin Australian cultural life and intellectual pursuits. It is the pre-eminent documentary record source in Australia.

'The National Library of Australia makes an important contribution to maintaining Australia's culture and heritage, and these new members will add to the significant expertise

already present on the Council,' Mr McGauran said.
