Howard Admits Rents Will Rise Above ANTS Package Level Kim Beazley - Leader of the Opposition

Media Statement - 18 June 2000

Today John Howard said that if the half-GST is removed from long-term caravan park residents, their rents would still rise by the same amount. What this means is he believes rents will rise by five and a half percent - as opposed to what the ANTS package said at the time of the last election, 2.3%.

While Labor has not said what will be the content of its roll back, we have consistently said that top priority in the roll back will be accorded to the GST imposed on the caravan park residents.

What I said today is a repeat of what I said on 23 March 2000 at the Shangri-La Mobile Home Park, Tuncurry. We have not moved from this position. This undertaking is as follows:

RESIDENT: Final question, Mr Beazley... Are you prepared to state, once again, at the closure of this - if you get elected in the next general election - your first priority, in this room, here and now, is to get rid of this darn GST on caravan parks?

BEAZLEY: Yes. We have said this, not just to you, but to the chaps, to the people who came up previously. That we have said that we are going to put out the full detail of the roll back of the GST but we will roll it back and the top priority area for rolling it back is your situation. Hopefully, hopefully if you keep the pressure up that will be irrelevant.
