A Joint Press Release by the Minister for Social Security, Senator Jocelyn Newman, and the Minister for Family Services, Mr Warwick Smith

COMMONWEALTH TO VICTORIA’S AID

September 27, 1998

Victorian workers whose employment is affected by the Esso gas plant industrial accident may be eligible for Social Security benefits, Minister for Social Security, Senator Jocelyn Newman said today.

“People who find themselves unemployed may be eligible for Newstart Allowance, subject to income and asset testing by Centrelink,” said Senator Newman.

“And for those whose incomes have been reduced, their partners may become eligible for Partner Allowance.”

Senator Newman said people should, where possible, go to their nearest Centrelink office to test their eligibility for these benefits.

In addition to the workers whose employment is affected by this accident, many Victorians are experiencing inconvenience and possible hardship.

The Commonwealth is particularly concerned about the impact on older people and people with a disability in the Victorian community.

The Office of the Minister for Family Services, Mr Warwick Smith, is holding urgent discussions with the Victorian State Government on ways in which both governments can work together to help people adversely affected.
