Valuable visit to Torres Strait: Prosser

The Minister responsible for Customs, Geoff Prosser, gained valuable local knowledge concerning Customs issues in the Torres Strait in a visit to the region this week.

Mr Prosser said he had held productive talks with a number of senior officials in the region, including deputy chairman of Saibai Island Council Mr Waba Waigana and the chairman of Yorke Island Council, Mr Joseph Mosley.

"Not only did my visit to the Torres Strait provide valuable insight into local Customs operations, but I was able to talk to the people who live in the area to find out what the problems are on the ground," he said.

"Both Mr Waigana and Mr Mosley expressed concerns regarding Customs issues, including illegal immigration, drug smuggling and quarantine matters generally.

"I have listened to those concerns and the Government will respond appropriately."

Mr Prosser praised the Customs staff who worked in the region.

"Customs in the Torres Strait is no easy ride. The huge area to cover and potential for illegal activity makes theirs a very tough job and the Government appreciates their dedication.

"The Government is showing through visits like this that it is concerned about what goes on in the Torres Strait and far north Queensland."
