Labor Blocks Forest Workers’ Compensation

All three non major party Senators from Tasmania voted tonight for the right of forest industry workers to be compensated when put out of work. However the Labor Party joined the Coalition to vote down this key Greens amendment to the Regional Forest Agreements Bill, which the Democrats also supported.

Labor also joined the government to guillotine the bill through the Senate, including the compensation clause for logging corporations should forests be protected by future government action.

“This is an awful example of Labor acting for the corporations but dumping the workers. Since the RFA was signed in Tasmania, more than 460 workers have lost their jobs”, Senator Brown said.
