The Hon Julie Bishop MP Minister for Ageing

MEDIA RELEASE

23 December 2005 JB202/05

The gift of time and caring

Australians should give the gift of time spent in the company of someone who needs their support and caring, Federal Minister for Ageing Julie Bishop said today.

Ms Bishop said: “This time of year brings joy and celebration for most people, however it can be a time of loneliness for many others.”

“The Australian Bureau of Statistics reveals that more than 90 per cent of people over the age of 70 are living at home.

“An increasing number of older people live alone.

“As Christmas approaches, it would be a welcomed gesture if we visited someone we knew living in an aged care home, contacted a long lost friend, dropped in to visit a neighbour, or arranged a street party to get to know those living nearby.

“Such acts of kindness bring benefits to our whole community.”

Mr Bishop said many Australians spend hours searching for appropriate gifts, but the fact is that many people would appreciate a small part of that time with some who cares about them.
